The Benefits of CGx Testing
Hereditary cancer genetic (CGx) testing can be extremely helpful in the detection and treatment of genetic cancers such as those that involve genes associated with epithelial cell cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, skin cancer and liver cancer. The human body makes several copies of every gene it has, just like a computer, and each time a gene is copied, the strand is affected. If some DNA from a normal person makes a mistake, the same DNA strand will make the same error in the next person’s gametes or reproductive cells. If both strands are flawed, then an unexpected cancer may develop.
Heterozygous (identical) genetic mutations occur when a child inherits two copies of a faulty gene from one or both parents. Genetically identical twins often have an exceptionally close family history and are at increased risk for certain diseases, including familial cancer. CGX testing reveals whether a patient is predisposed to getting certain types of hereditary cancers by analyzing the patient’s family history.
