The Utility of Genetic Testing

The Utility of Genetic Testing

The utility of genetic testing has been a matter of debate. While some people applaud the technology and believe it to be an important part of medicine, others decry it as unestablished science. The truth, however, is that utility of genetic testing has been proven over again in countless studies done around the world. In this day and age, it simply makes no sense to deny this important tool of medicine to those who need it most.

There are many benefits to utilizing genetic testing. One of the primary benefits is that it can identify individuals at risk for certain diseases. These diseases include heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. By identifying those at risk, doctors are better able to provide the proper medical treatment. By preventing or slowing the progress of disease, those at risk receive the benefits they deserve from preventative care.

There is also a great deal of information gathered through genetic testing. This information can allow your doctor to detect certain medical conditions before the condition develops into a more serious condition. This helps to shorten the recovery time for those who have a history of such conditions. The research gained through genetic testing can even help determine how a patient might react if he or she were to undergo treatment for a disease. For instance, is the potential patient more likely to have a positive response to a certain drug over another.

The utility of genetic testing goes far beyond simple identification of predispositions to certain diseases. Through testing, scientists are able to examine entire families, or sets of families, for similar patterns of genetics. They are able to see whether or not members of a family share certain traits or illnesses, or if they are more likely than the general population to pass along these traits and illnesses. This allows a doctor to create a family history of a certain disease or set of diseases and study how the family behaves together over time.

A major benefit to genetic testing is that it can be used to predict the likelihood of a patient having certain conditions in the future. These conditions can lead to a greater likelihood of a patient suffering from certain diseases in the future. For example, some tests can be used to determine the likelihood that a person will suffer a stroke in the future. This greatly lowers the risk for the individual because strokes are very common to individuals who suffer from high cholesterol levels.

As you can see, the utility of genetic testing has increased dramatically over the years. This is especially true given the current focus that medical professionals have placed on prevention. By examining the utility of genetic testing, more individuals are becoming aware of the many benefits of genetic testing.
